In this method, an osteotomy will be accomplished at first. Osteotomy: it is a controlled and delicate incision on the leg bone which is done in the area of lower leg or thigh for lengthening.
Then the inner bar (orthopedic nail) is inserted into the canal of the lower leg or thigh bone (tibia or femur) then the distal and proximal side get fixed with special screws.
The external fixator is placed outside of legs for lengthening.
Right after the surgery a Medical analgesia Disposable elastomeric infusion pump is used which is a machine for pain control purposes. This machine injects strong painkillers continuously and slowly to control the postoperative pains.
The next day Dr.Motallebizadeh visits the volunteer personally and checks the volunteer condition and allows the volunteer to walk. Usually most people are able to walk with a walker from the day after the surgery and will discharge from the Hospital.
One week after the surgery the first visit will be made in the doctor’s clinic and how the lengthening instrument system works will be taught to the volunteer. After that the visits will be done on a monthly basis. And the radiology photos are sent to the doctor every 2 weeks.
In this stage, four times a day and each time a quarter millimeter, the incremental screw will increase as instructed.
In the Bone lengthening period you should pay attention that synchronic growth of soft tissue and bone is the volunteer task. It occurs with regular and adequate stretching exercise and physiotherapy.
At the end course of lengthening and reaching the desired height, the external fixator will be removed. For stability and safety until 70 percent healing of the bones in the lengthening area, a combination of Pins and Orthopedic casting tape is used for lower legs, that could be removed outside of operating room (in Dr. Motalebizade clinic)
In this stage the osteoblast phase will begin. With special physical training exercises, good nutrition and following Dr. Motalebizade advises, you can increase osteoblast pace and return to normal daily life as soon as possible.
